Visitors to the West Midland Safari & Leisure Park in Bewdley
this season will be able to see the park's newest arrival - a baby
white rhino.
Baby Hope, weighing in at 150lbs, was born in March and he and
his mum Tootsie are doing very well.
Everyone at the park was very excited at his arrival as they have
been waiting for 30 years for such a happy event. Hope's father,
Sharka, is never far away either. The park now has five adult white
rhinoceros and look forward to another baby being born in the future.
Hope came into the world totally unaware of the foot and mouth
epidemic that has caused so much chaos in the country for the last
few months. But one resident who did give a helping 'hand' was eight-year-old
African elephant Jack. His keeper Mike Dodson sent a trunk call
for assistance when his jeep broke down in the animal reserve. Normally,
that wouldn't be a problem but, with the foot and mouth restrictions,
it meant only disinfected vehicles could enter. So Jack saved the
day by towing the jeep away on a rope!
Visitors to the safari park have been bussed around the animal
reserves in specially disinfected coaches, but they may be able
to drive their own cars through again very soon. All the park's
great attractions are still there, with the one exception of Pets
Corner - the pigs, ponies and llamas have been put in the animal
reserve for the season.
However, there's still loads to see and do at the 200-acre park,
including the drive-thru safari - with Tiger World and African Elephant
Reserve - Reptile House and Reptile Encounters, Seal Aquarium, Sealion
Show and family rides and attractions.

The winners will be the senders of the first ten correct entries
drawn after the closing date of Thursday May 15.
The safari park is open seven days a week, from 10am, until October
28. Admission is pounds 5.95 each (children under 4 are free). Optional
all-day multi-ride wristbands cost pounds 7, with cheaper height-restricted
and ride restricted wristbands.
The usual Mail children's competition rules apply.
