The Kenya Wildlife Service started moving rhinos in an operation
which will cost Sh800 million (about US$ 10 million). Four rhinos
will be transferred from Solio Ranch in Laikipia District to Meru
National Park, the KWS director, Dr Nehemiah Rotich said.
The money, which will also be used to rehabilitate roads leading
to the park and ongoing construction of electric fencing, was donated
to the KWS by two donors. The organisation received Sh550 million
from France while the rest was given by the International Fund for
Animal Welfare.
Mr Rotich said the park was once a home to rhinos before they were
killed by poachers. The KWS wants to ensure that by June 2002, it
will have finished moving ten more black rhinos, the director said,
presently there is only a lone animal.
The rhinos have increasingly become endangered in Kenya with only
490 of them remaining.
