ASHEBORO - Mike Loomis, chief veterinarian for the N.C. Zoological
Park, will travel to Cameroon, West Africa, Nov. 12 to attend an
emergency meeting called by conservationists in an effort to save
the Western black rhinoceros.
Found only in Cameroon, the Western black rhino may soon become
extinct. Always somewhat rare, this rhino subspecies has recently
come under heavy fire from poachers. Only 12-15 of the animals are
thought to remain.
The World Wide Fund for Nature-Cameroon and the International Union
for the Conservation of Natural Resources have called the meeting
as part of a last-ditch effort to save the animals.
