PETALING JAYA: Dr Annelisa Kilbourn, a field scientist for a rhino conservation organisation, has been killed in a plane crash in Africa.
Kilbourn, a member of the SOS Rhino organisation, was killed on Nov 1 while flying to Gabon, Africa. No further details were available.
 Kilbourn
was helping SOS Rhino use handheld computers to track the rhinos in
Tabin, Sabah.
The Swiss-born scientist was a globetrotting conservationist and veterinarian who was heavily involved in various conservation projects around the world, most notably a gorilla health evaluation and monitoring programme in Gabon, and SOS Rhino.
She had been working in Gabon, monitoring the gorillas in the area to develop human and animal disease transmission prevention protocols, which would help ease pressure on the animals in view of the current rise in eco-tourism.
She earned her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Tufts University in 1996 and upon graduating, received a fellowship to study orang utans in Sabah.
It was in Sabah that she fell in love with the Sumatran rhino and
eventually made it her main area of focus.
