KUALA TERENGGANU: The Wildlife Department is keeping tabs on one of its "prized
possessions" - the tiny rhinoceros population in the state to ensure that
it does not fall victim to poachers.
State director Ahmad Shamsuddin Shaari said about four or five rhinoceros had been detected although only one had been sighted so far.
"We want to keep their whereabouts a secret as we do not want poachers to hunt them for their horns," he said yesterday.
Ahmad Shamsuddin said the department had formed a special rhino protection unit comprising four rangers and two local guides to track the animals.
"They go on the ground every month to monitor the rhinos' movements," he said.
The department, he said, had detected the rhinoceros' presence based on their marks and urine and the plants consumed.
He also said the animals were highly sensitive and would move away at the slightest disturbance.
