1. World Rhino News
LOS ANGELES Herman, the oldest male Indian rhinoceros in
a North American zoo, was put down Thursday at the Los Angeles Zoo.
The 36-year-old, 4,500-pound rhino was suffering from severe foot
lesions . . .

In response to the recent slaughter of a female Sumatran rhinoceros
in Sabah:
TEMERLOH, MALAYSIA - The Science, Technology and Environment Ministry
will this year push for amendments to the Wildlife Protection Act
1972 to give it more bite.
Its Minister Datuk Law Hieng Ding said today that under the proposed
amendments, the penalty for offenders would be increased by 100
percent . . .

Our traveling rhinoceros specialist, Dr. Nan Schaffer, visited the
North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro and collected semen from a pair of
southern white rhinos. Successfully collecting a large quantity
of semen from a white rhino is no easy task . . .

Zoo Atlanta Erects a Rhino Chute
A rhino chute is a cage-like enclosure for containing a rhinoceros
while a veterinarian works with it. Difficult procedures such as
ultrasound examinations, collections of semen, and nutrition studies
are made a little simpler when the rhino stands inside a chute .
