Project: An on-going study that is building a baseline of
information on serum blood values across seasonal and physiological
variations.
Location: Milwaukee County Zoo
Species: Southern Black Rhinoceros, (Diceros bicornis minor)
Barley, female
Brewster, male
Methods Employed:
Target training, Blood collection via syringe from lower front leg,
Semen collection
Comments:
Keepers have trained these wild-caught rhinos to come up to the
side of the cage and let them insert a needle to collect blood.
They take about 10cc (about as much as a test-tube worth). Health
and reproduction parameters of these animals have been analyzed.
