The Rhinoceros Reproduction Program (RRP) intent is to facilitate
propagation of these endangered species. The program coordinates
with the American Zoological Association Taxon Advisory Group (TAG)
on goals for reproduction in the rhinoceros.
These goals are:
1. To provide technical support for management and manipulation
of reproduction for the rhino
2. To support reproductive programs for in-situ conservation of
rhinos
3. To provide funding and expertise to reproductive research
RRP has contributed to the understanding of the biology of the rhinoceros
through investigations and development of methodology on reproduction.
The program has collaborated in the formulation of the AZA Rhino
Advisory Group Five Year Masterplan 1999.
Problems identified by this plan that are being addressed by RRP
include:
1. Causes for non-producing rhinoceroses
2. Reproductive pathology in Sumatran rhinoceros
3. Reproductive suppression between females
4. Incidence of reproductive pathology
5. Improvements in semen collection techniques
6. Male fertility assessment
7. Developed artificial insemination techniques
RRP pursues research that is directly applicable to management and
propagation of the rhinoceros.
This involves:
a. Establishing procedures and techniques for acquisition of data
and/or samples (i.e. cage restraints)
b. Establishing a baseline of normal parameters
c. Interpreting and/or treating abnormal conditions
d. Collecting and preserving genetic material
